River Tyne, Newcastle
Never mind the majestic Mississippi, the Tyne has also inspired a handful of songs, including not one but two by local lads Dire Straits - Southbound Again and Down to the Waterline as well as Jimmy Nail’s Big River. Most famously perhaps the river was immortalised in Lindisfarne’s 1971 song Fog on the Tyne, an unlikely hit again years later for local-born footballer Paul Gascoigne. Visit the Millennium Bridge, which spans the river between Newcastle Quayside and Gateshead Quays
