Dedicated to "all the lonely people", the statue was created in 1982 by fellow pop star Tommy Steele as a tribute to the Liverpudlian pop idols and everyday Liverpool folk.

Although there was a gravestone to Eleanor Rigby in St. Peter's Churchyard in Wooton it has been suggested that Paul took the title from Eleanor Bron and a wine and spirit warehouse he saw while visiting Jane Asher in Bristol.
